Meet Matthew Santonastaso – Helicopter Flight Instructor

Matthew Santonastaso has been passionate about helicopters since childhood, fulfilling his dream of flight as soon as he could afford lessons. His aviation journey began after serving in the 82nd Airborne Division, where he developed a deep respect for aviation and airborne operations. Starting in Robinson R22s, he has since gained experience flying a wide range of helicopters, from the Mosquito XE to the Sikorsky S-58.

In addition to being a helicopter flight instructor (CFI-H), Matthew is also a fixed-wing pilot and a skydiving coach. His diverse background in aviation allows him to bring a unique perspective to flight instruction, blending safety, precision, and real-world operational knowledge.

Unique Experience in Emergency Situations

Matthew is no stranger to high-pressure situations. He has been awarded commendations from the U.S. Army for running through machine-gun fire in combat, demonstrating his ability to perform under extreme stress. In aviation, he has piloted helicopters to a safe landing after an emergency and has successfully managed a skydiving parachute malfunction, further proving his calm and decisive problem-solving skills in life-threatening situations. His experience in handling emergencies translates directly to his teaching, ensuring students are well-prepared for any scenario they may face in the air.

Teaching Style & Philosophy

Matthew believes in high-energy helicopter flying, always keeping the aircraft moving to maximize performance and enhance safety. He teaches students to be proactive pilots, constantly anticipating and adapting to conditions rather than reacting too late. His approach ensures pilots develop the confidence and skill to handle real-world flying beyond just passing a checkride.

Matt is always excited to fly new helicopters.
